William Washington Barker

William Washington Barker was born March 4, 1827, in Gibson Co., Indiana, son of William Barker and Abiah Hopkins. He was brought to Sulphur Springs, Texas, in 1836. He was a farmer and stock raiser. For 25 years is was also the county surveyor for Hopkins Co., Texas. William was married October 4, 1850, in Hopkins County, to Almira Ball Harlow, who was born April 19, 1829, in Nelson or Albemarle Co., Virginia, daughter of Nicholas Harlow and Jeanetta Bridgwater. Almira's first intentions were to marry Hiram W. Bailey. The license was issued on April 27, 1848, but never returned. The marriage apparently never took place leaving her free to marry William Barker two and a half years later.

William and Almira, or Mira as she was called, moved to Carrizo Springs in Dimmit Co., Texas, and raised a large family.

William died January 28, 1904, and Almira on December 10, 1914. Both are buried in Mount Hope Cemetery in Carrizo Springs.
